Set in an expansive alpine basin at 1,764 metres above sea level beneath the towering glaciated summit of Mount Titlis, Trübsee is one of Central Switzerland's most celebrated mountain destinations. With crystal-clear turquoise water reflecting jagged limestone peaks and rolling green pastures, it offers an idyllic Alpine escape easily reached from the charming resort town of Engelberg.

The Experience

Reaching Trübsee is a scenic journey in itself. From Engelberg's valley station, the modern eight-seater TITLIS Xpress gondola lifts you swiftly up through pine-scented forests and steep rock walls, delivering you directly to the Trübsee middle station in roughly ten minutes. Stepping out onto the plateau, you are greeted by fresh mountain air, ringing cowbells, and panoramic vistas stretching across the Uri Alps.

The circular trail around Trübsee covers approximately 3.4 kilometres on a wide, well-graded gravel path that is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Walking at an easy pace takes around an hour, though you will frequently want to pause to admire the reflections of the peaks in the still morning water. Along the way, thoughtfully placed wooden benches and barbecue spots invite you to relax and soak in the majestic landscape.

Beyond the relaxed lakeside stroll, Trübsee is a hub for alpine exploration. Visitors can row classic wooden rowing boats across the emerald waters, try their hand at kayaking, or test their nerve on the nearby ziplines and adventure trails. Photographers and drone pilots will find endless dramatic angles, particularly in early morning or late afternoon when low sunlight rakes across the glacial contours of Mount Titlis.

For hikers seeking bigger elevation gains, Trübsee connects to several world-class trekking routes, including the famed Four Lakes Hike (Vier-Seen-Höhenwanderung) leading toward Engstlenalp and Melchsee-Frutt, as well as the steep mountain trails ascending toward the Stand station and the Titlis glacier. However, the gentle loop around the lake remains the quintessential experience for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in pure Swiss alpine charm.

When to Visit

The summer hiking season at Trübsee runs from June through October, when the lake is completely thawed and the surrounding alpine meadows burst into bloom with gentians and alpine roses. In early autumn, crisp blue skies provide exceptional visibility across the surrounding peaks. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland with winter walking trails and snowshoe tracks.
