Glattalpsee, Schwyz — A Hidden Alpine Gem in Switzerland

Tucked away at 1,850 metres above sea level in the rugged heart of Central Switzerland, Glattalpsee is one of those rare alpine treasures that still feels wonderfully undiscovered. This turquoise jewel sits in a dramatic glacial bowl above the Muotathal valley in the Canton of Schwyz — far from the tourist crowds of Lucerne or Interlaken, yet every bit as breathtaking.

The Experience

The most popular way to reach the lake is via the small Sahli–Glattalp cable car, which whisks you from the valley floor to the alpine plateau in just a few minutes. As the cabin rises above the treeline, the landscape transforms: dense forest gives way to open meadows dotted with wildflowers, and then — suddenly — the lake appears, its waters an almost impossible shade of turquoise against the grey limestone peaks.

Once at the top, a gentle circular trail of roughly 7 kilometres loops around the entire lake. The northern shore follows a wide gravel path that's perfect for a leisurely stroll, while the southern side narrows into rockier terrain that adds a touch of adventure. The full circuit takes about two hours at a relaxed pace, with countless spots to stop and take in the panorama.

What makes Glattalpsee truly special is its ever-changing character. On a calm morning the water mirrors the surrounding peaks so perfectly that it's hard to tell where rock ends and reflection begins. By afternoon, thermals often bring dramatic cloud formations rolling over the ridgeline, casting shifting shadows across the alpine bowl. For those seeking more of a challenge, the Glattalp area serves as a gateway to the summit of Ortstock, a demanding route that involves steep scree slopes and a chain-assisted rock face. But even if you stick to the lakeside loop, the sense of altitude and isolation is remarkable. A small mountain restaurant near the cable car station offers simple refreshments, but packing a picnic to enjoy on the shore is the real move.

When to Visit

The hiking season at Glattalpsee runs from June through October, though snow can linger on shaded sections of the trail well into July. Early autumn is arguably the finest time to visit: the summer crowds have thinned, the air is crisp and clear, and the larch trees on the lower slopes begin their golden transformation. Whatever the season, always check local conditions before setting out — the weather in these mountains can shift with startling speed.
